Making Your Own Lanyards
You can follow these
simple steps and create your very own lanyard to keep or to give as a
gift to secure your keys, cell phone, badge, or whistle.
Several years ago, my son’s Boy Scout
troop made lanyards by tying crown knots to earn a merit badge. The
instructions they followed were simple, enough so that many of the boys
also made lanyards to give as gifts. You can follow these simple steps
and create your very own lanyard to keep or to give as a gift to secure
your keys, cell phone, badge, or whistle.
To start with, make sure you have the right material. My son’s troop
used craft lace, lanyard, gimp, or boondoggle, which is a thin, elastic,
and flexible plastic lace and is available at most craft stores.
While at the craft store you can see if they carry any macramé books,
which will show you other knots you can use to make or braid a lanyard.
Many of these knots however, are complex and time consuming. As I stated
early the knot that my son’s troop used was the crown know, which is
possible one of the simpler ones.
The basic crown knot:
- Cut 2 strands of craft lace, the
length depends on the type of lanyard you wish to make. I suggest
for your first attempt that you cut the 2 strands approximately 18
inches. You want to fold the 2 strands together then tie a knot to
hold them securely together at toward the top, giving you four
secured strings.
- Spread apart the four strings, with
each string pointing in the directions of a compass, north, east,
south, and west. You want to hold the WEST string close to the knot
with one finger, while pulling the WEST string over the NORTH
string.
- Next, you want to cross the NORTH
string over the EAST string. At this point, the NORTH string will
cover both the WEST and EAST string. Cross the EAST string over the
SOUTH string. Now, cross the South string over the West string.
- At this point, you want to gently
pull each of the four strings very tight, this will create your
first knot. You will continue this same process until you reach the
desired length, forming a rounded lanyard.
I would like to pass on a tip, if you
purchase 4 different colors of the craft lace, and use each of the four
colors, this will help you learn the crown knot.
