What are Lanyards?
According to the copy
of Webster’s unabridged Dictionary of the English Language, a lanyard
is, ‘a nautical term for a short rope used to secure rigging, or a short
cord used to suspend an item, usually a whistle, or a knife.’
I have participated in countless
tradeshows during my 25 years of working in the corporate world during
this time I have witnessed the evolution of the lanyard from the simple
strap of cloth, which held a coached whistle to finely crafted beaded
creations that any woman would be proud to wear. Last weekend, while
working a tradeshow, I was asked by client just what it was I had given
him for stopping by my booth. I politely informed him that it was a
lanyard. He looked it over very carefully then asked, “What’s it for?”
I had assumed that by now, everyone knew what a lanyard was, but perhaps
don't know it by name. I have heard them called everything from neck
straps, security straps, ID straps, ID cords, dog leashes, etc. with the
majority of the lanyards advertising the company in which the person
works. The particular corporation I work for, issues parking card, which
are separate from our identification card. In addition, employees who
work in secure areas, they are issued an additional identification card,
all of which are attached to their lanyard.

by Webster’s, they are used by conferences, trade shows, event staff,
employees of small to large corporations to attach countless types of
credentials as well as credential holders. An example of this would be
the promotional lanyards I was handling out to visitors, which bore the
name of my company. Lanyards can be fitted with several different
attachments and accessories such as key rings, crocodile clips, snap
hooks, Dog clips, carabineers, mobile phone holders, bottle holders,
bottle openers etc.
Lanyards can be customized with your company’s or organization’s message
or logo, along with your design and color scheme. This provides the user
as well as all who see it with a reminder of your company. To let you
know the effectiveness, a parent at my son’s school gave out lanyards
from his company to each of the student body, and for them to secure
their student identification badges. It wasn’t long after that the
corporation I work for was in need of the service that this parent’s
company offered. Because of that lanyard, we now do business with this
company and are extremely pleased.
